Serge Modular for Eurorack

Serge Tcherepnin "Serge Modular" is an analogue modular synthesizer system developed by French composer and electronic designer Serge Tcherepnin in the 1970s at The California Institute of the Arts. Serge's vision to create a "people's synthesizers" led to a unique modular music system with an iconic design.

In collaboration with and under licence from Serge Tcherepnin, SERGE Modular combines the original Serge circuits with the advantages of today's technology and new ideas from Serge. The modules on this page are in Eurorack (3U) format - modules in the classic Serge dimension ("4U" panel height) and the typical banana jacks can be found here.

Serge GTO for eurorack

Serge GTO

The Serge GTO is a newly designed, complex multi-functional module which can be patch programmed to provide various slew and sample functions both for audio and CV signals, but also act as a (dual) oscillator or filter or bitcrusher or ... It is one of the essential Serge modules. The GTO is an offspring of the famous Serge SSG.

The Smooth section will place a positive and negative slew on input voltage transitions for lag effects, voltage controlled portamento and for low frequency filter applications. In Cycle-mode (cycle jack patched to the input), the Smooth side “will oscillate yielding a voltage controlled triangle wave LFO. A high level into the HOLD input will enable the Smooth Function to be used as a track-and-hold circuit with voltage controlled slew rate.

The Stepped function can be used as a sample-and-hold with voltage controlled slew rate limiting. In Cycle mode, a pulse applied to the Sample input will generate complex staircase waveforms for control voltage applications and for use as audio signals.

Each side has a temperature-compensated 1V/Oct input for use as an oscillator with a frequency range of up to 20kHz (left) and 8kHz (right). Each side tracks over 5 or 6 octaves.

The Coupler is an internal comparator which compares the output levels of the Smooth and the Stepped Generators. This output is useful for generating complex control voltages or random voltages.

Serge Extended ADSR Serge Extended ADSR

Serge Extended ADSR

Another Serge classic, the Extended ADSR (ADSR) is (according to the 1983 Serge catalogue):
a complex envelope generator using the four segment envelope normally encountered in keyboard synthesizers. This ADSR, however, is desiqned with extra features such as voltage control of each section, an initial voltaqe controllable delay time, switchable slopes and a master voltage control. Each segment may be manually set and voltage controlled, so the module may be used with orwithout kevboards as a versatile programmable control voltage generator. In addition to the normal Attack, Decay, Sustain and Release segments, an Initial Delay time is included. This allows multiple envelopes to be initiated from a single trigger or gate, delayed with respect to one another. Ramps for the Attack and Release seqments can be switched to either linear or exponential slopes with the three position switch. A master input controls all slope times to allow such effects as decreasing the entire envelope time as the pitch of an associated oscillator increases. This phenomenon is typical of manv acoustic instrument envelopes.

The eurorack version uses the original Serge circuitry and is superslim (skiff-friendly). Like in any R*S Serge for eurorack module, the voltage levels of the original design have been preserved - the output voltage is appr. 0 to 5V. This provides maximum authenticity and compatibility with other Serge modules and systems.

Some details of the Serge ADSR module

  • Initial delay
  • Switchable A and R slopes
  • All segments VC controlled
  • Eurorack (3U) format, 14 hp
  • Skiff-friendly: < 25mm deep
  • Power: ~ 25mA @ +12V / 20mA @ -12V

Active Pro / Noise / Precision CV-Pro

Serge Active Pro / Noise / Precision CV-Pro

The Active Processor (ACPR) is an accurate, linear crossfader for either control voltages or audio signals. The new version designed by Serge in 2017 offers a widely increased precision. This module provides an important link in complex patches, allowing to smoothly change from one control voltage to another. It is possible to cross- fade between different envelopes, for example, or to gradually switch control over a bank of oscillators from one output of a sequencer to another output. The ACPR also offers interesting uses in the audio range, from wave- blending even to waveshaping (with CV in audio-range).

The Serge NOISE SOURCE (NOI) generates both white and pink noise waveforms. The S/H Source output pro- duces the necessary input for a sample and hold function to produce equi-probable random voltages, similar to a 1/F distribution function and is a perfect companion for the Smoothed & Stepped Generator (SSG).

The Precision CV-Processor (CV-PRO) is also a new development that goes beyond adding and inverting control voltages. A precision input stage allows mixing 1V/ Oct voltages, e.g. to cent-accurately transpose sequences (i.e. stay in tune). A switch transposes precisely one octave up or down. The attenuverting stage offers full processing control of level and polarity of three inputs voltages includ- ing Serge’s unique diode-based wave-compression. This new version now allows using the non-linear attenuverter mixing stage with precise 1V/Oct (AUX) inputs without los- ing their precision. IN 1 is normalled to 5V and therefore can be used to add an DC offset when no input signal is present.

The new version has been developed by Serge for and in close cooperation with Random*Source.

The Random*Source ANC module comprises 3 modules:

  • Active Processor, newly designed by Serge in 2017
  • Serge Noise Source
  • New precision CV-Processor
  • Eurorack (3U) format, 18 hp
BOM / Build Documentation (PDF): Serge ACPR/Noise/CV-Pro

The ANC is available as complete module or as a DIY kit (front panel and pcb, all SMT parts already installed - - DOES NOT CONTAIN POTS, KNOBS OR TH-PARTS).

Serge TWS for Euro
Serge Triple Waveshaper for Euro TWS kit contents

Serge Triple+ Waveshaper (TWS+)

The TRIPLE WAVESHAPER (TWS) is a non-linear modifier which can transform a sawtooth wave into a sine wave. This classic module incorporates three independent waveshapers for modifying synthesizer waveforms or for processing signals from preamplified instruments. Although originally designed as a waveshaper for early Serge oscillators, this module has been found to be a excellent modifier of electronic and acoustic sounds, and is highly recommended for subtle timbral modifications beyond the range of simple oscillator/filter patches.

The R*S version extends the classic TWS concept:

  • +1: An additional (4th) waveshaper has been added (right after the first / bottom waveshaper) that can be dialed in smoothly using the +1 knob. Turned down (CCW) the bottom section acts as in the original (as if that additional waveshaper would not exist). Turned up (CW) the bottom section is actually 2 waveshapers in series.
  • Switches to link the 3 sections - bottom to top. Using these switches all sections can be set to act in series, starting at the bottom and ending at the top, providing the combined effect of 3 to 4 waveshapers (or anything in between) using the +1 knob.
  • Linking only the middle and top section and turning the +1 knob up (to have 2 sections in the bottom) allows you to use the module for isntance as two independent 2-stage waveshapers (using bottom in and out for one and middle in and top out for the other) - e.g. for stereo processing.

The Random*Source version is a licensed and authorized adaption of the original Serge design.

Serge Dual Universal Slope Generator mk2 (DSG)

The Serge Dual Universal Slope Generator (DSG) is probably the most versatile module of a Serge Modular system, incorporating a wide range of functions for both CV and audio. Some functions for which one Slope Generator can be used: VC Transient Envelope Generator, VC LFO, VC Portamento device, Envelope Follower (Detector), VC Pulse Delay (Monostable), Sub-Harmonic Series Generator (Divider), Audio Oscillator with variable waveform symmetry (saw to triangle), Non-Linear Audio Processor (low-fidelity VCF).

From the catalog: "The Universal Slope Generators are unity gain voltage followers with voltage controllable slopes. The range of control is exponential, extremely wide, and the Rise and Fall times can be controlled independently. The range of the Slope Generator is from sub-sonic to high audio frequency. Trigger inputs and trigger outputs allows each section of this dual module to function as a transient (envelope) generator, pulse delay, or in a "cycling mode" (to produce an LFO or clock). Since the Rise and Fall times are voltage controllable, this adds another dimension to the above functions.

The DSG mk2 version has been optimized for audio performance and speed/precision. The top section covers a frequency range up to more than 10kHz. It also offers improved tracking and some temperature compensation.

Now - for the first time and licenced by Serge - an updated version (mk2) of the DSG is available as a Eurorack module.

StereoMixer for Euro

Equal Power Stereo Mixer

The Stereo-Mixer is a 2 input, 2 output equal-power panning mixer designed combine the sound of the famous Serge VCAs with the most audiophile parts available today in a special edition for Eurorack - NJR Muses op-amps and THAT2180 VCA chips. The module has 2 independent input channels (with attenuators) that can be Stereo panned between the 2 outputs. Each channel's gain is controlled by a gain knob and as Gain CV input (with attenuator) which allows to go into massive overdrive with a very organic sound. There are also two AUX inputs that allow signals to be routed in at unity gain. Both panning and Gain CV inputs have been designed to handle audio rates, making the Stereo Mixer a very powerful waveshaping and droning tool.

Beware that the module is able to deliver massive gain, resulting in output levels of up to appr. +/-11V when overdriven, so make sure your other equipment (AD converters, mixers) can handle this

  1. Balanced Outputs, using „a new generation of monolithic audio differential line drivers offering improved performance over conventional crosscoupled designs“ for low noise and distortion. These outputs can be connected to balanced or unbalanced equipment (amplifiers, A/D converters...)
  2. NJR Muses op-amps in the audio path.
  3. Optimized value set and easier calibration / setup.

Two Aux inputs can also be used to chain mixers. The output is available at a pair of banana jacks as well as (6.35mm / 1/4") TRS jacks (phone connectors) for connecting to external amplifiers, ADCs etc.

Serge :N Comparator (NCOM) for Euro

Serge Divide by N Comparator (÷NCOM)

The Serge Divide by N Comparator (NCOM) is a rare, much sought-after and very essential Serge module covering a number of functions: comparator, voltage-controlled pulse divider, and voltage-controlled staircase generator.

The ÷N COMPARATOR consists of two sections - a comparator (right side) and a voltage-controlled pulse divider (left side). The ÷N output of the pulse divider sends out a pulse on every N-th comparator pulse where N is a number from 1 to 31. N can be (pre-)set with the divider’s control knob (1 ÷N) and can by changed with a control voltage. The VC knob (attenuator)on the bottom of the left side determines how much effect the control voltage has on “N”. In addition, the divider generates a staircase waveform with N steps. This can be used to produce whole-tone steps when run into the 1V/Oct input of a VCO or as a stepped control voltage to change for instance the cutoff of a filter.

The comparator provides a number of useful “housekeeping functions”: Logical decisions (if the +input is greater than the -input, the output will be high, otherwise low), Level detection (whenever a variable waveform crosses the theshold, a pulse is generated ), Pulse width modulation or Rectifying a waveform (e.g. a sine or triangle wave). (More applications and info in the Build Doc).

Now - for the first time and licenced by Serge - the NCOM is available as DIY kit for Euro.

Serge Variable Slope filter (VCFS) for Euro Serge VCFS

Serge Variable Slope filter (VCFS)

The Serge Extended Variable Slope filter (VCFS) is a unique filter of the Serge system, covering a wide range of sonic character. According to the 1983 Serge catalogue, the “VARIABLE SLOPE VCF (VCFS) allows the amount of filtering to be dynamically controlled, from barely perceptible filtering to highly resonant, sharp cut-offs. With the variable slope control in the center position, the VCFS acts as a typical flat-response VCF, with high, low, and band~pass outputs available simultaneously. The slope of the cut-off is 12 db/octave. As the control is moved toward the maximum position, the resonance of the filter increases, so that the cut-off becomes sharper."

Now - for the first time and licenced by Serge - the VCFS is available as DIY kit for Euro.

Serge Variable Bandwidth Filter (VCF2) for Euro

Serge Variable Bandwidth Filter (VCF2)

The Serge Variable Bandwidth Filter (VCF2) is probably the rarest classic filter in the Serge system, offering a unique combination of 2 filters. According to the 1983 Serge catalogue, the “VARIABLE BANDWIDTH VCF (VCF2) has a band-pass output which can be varied manually or with voltage control. This is a standard response synthesizer VCF, typical to filters used in many studio systems. In the VCF2, two state-variable VCF's are connected in series to produce a total of five outputs. High pass, low pass, two fixed bandwidth outputs, and one variable bandwidth output are available. The outputs are all flat-response (no resonance) so the VCF2 is suitable for processing concrete sounds without introducing resonant coloration to the timbres. Under voltage or manual control, cut-off frequency of the high and low-pass outputs are affected, as well as the center frequency of the two band-pass outputs. Both center frequency and bandwidth are independently controllable on the variable bandwidth output."

Now - for the first time, designed and licenced by Serge - the VCF2 is available as a eurorack module. A new switch has been added which determines if the CV-controls are routed to the first (left), second (right) or both filters, bringing even more sonic options than the original.

The VCFQ is available as a complete module (superslim, SMT).

Serge Wave Multipliers for Euro Serge SSG

Serge Wave Multipliers (VCM)

The legendary Serge Wave Multipliers (VCM) are designed to dynamically add new harmonically-related overtones to an input waveform. Accroding to the 1982 catalogue, they “alter the timbre in exciting new ways, producing interesting alternative forms of signal processing which are unique in the Serge Modular Music System. Since there are three entirely separate and different types of Wave Multipliers in this module, an enormously varied palette of new effects can be synthesized.”

The top section offers two different modes, selected by a switch. In the “HI” position, the module functions to “square-up” an incoming signal, with a rounded flattening of the signal peaks, somewhat similar to overdriving a tube amplifier (with voltage control!). In “LO” mode, the module is a linear gain controlled VCA. This is useful for various functions such as amplitude modulation and for gating signals into the other sections.

The middle section generates a sweep of the odd harmonics (1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 and 13th) when a sine wave is applied to its input and the FOLD knob is turned up or a control voltage is swept from low to high. This effect is similar to overblowing a wind pipe closed at one end. A second input is included to allow two signals to be mixed before processing. This module can be used to explore timbral areas beyond the range of ring modulation.

The bottom Wave Multiplier performs non-linear wavehaping known as full-wave rectification, but with sophisticated level-compensating conditioning as well. The circuit uses three full-wave rectifier sections linked in a very refined controllable format. Sweeping the VC input over its range will produce a smooth timbral transition using the even harmonics (second, fourth, and eighth). Many other partials are present in this basic sound, however, and the sonorities are very rich and varied. The white output is a “squared up” version of the black one, resembling an harmonically enhanced pulse width modulation.

The Random*Source version of the Serge Wave Mulitpliers for Euro is a licensed and authorized adaption of the original Serge design, using best parts available today (e.g. Burr-Brown op-amps, C0G capacitors up to 220N) for optimum audio performance.

Serge Resonant EQ for Euro Serge Resonant Equalizer main pcb

Serge Resonant Equalizer (EQ)

The RESONANT EQUALIZER (EQ) is a unique ten-band filter designed specifically for electronic sound synthesis and processing. Except for the top and bottom frequency bands, the bands are spaced at an interval of a major seventh. The Resonant Equalizer is designed to produce formant peaks and valleys similar to those in acoustic insstruments.

There are three equalized outputs: the two COMB outputs provide the sums of the two alternate filter bands, while the two top outputs are the (identical) mix of all filter bands. Please note that there is no sharp separation between the bands, moving any frequency knob will have an influence on both COMB outputs. This equalizer is special in that the bands can be set to be resonant: when the knobs are in the middle position, the response at the main EQ Output is flat. When the knobs are positioned between the 9 and 3 o’clock position, up to 12 db of boost or cut is set at the band. If the knob is set beyond the 3 o’clock position, the band will become resonant, simulating the natural resonance of acoustic instrument formant structures. Below the 9 o’clock position, increased band rejection is achieved.

The Random*Source version of the filter is a licensed and authorized adaption of the legendary Serge equalizer for Eurorack. It adds an input mixer with 2 inputs that can be built/used to attenuate or amplify/distort the input signal(s) before they are sent into the EQ and a Feedback section (knob and phase switch) which allows to feed back the output signal or the inverted output signal (depending on the Phase switch). Adding inverted feedback leads to phase cancellation effects - unlike the “normal” feedback, level decreases and the signal thins out.

Now - licenced by Serge - the legendary EQ is available as DIY kit for Eurorack.

Serge Smooth & Stepped Generator (SSG)

The Serge Smooth & Stepped Generator (SSG) is a complex multi-functional module which can be patch programmed to provide various slew and sample functions both for audio and CV signals. It is one of the essential Serge modules.

The Smooth section will place a positive and negative slew on input voltage transitions for lag effects, voltage controlled portamento and for low frequency filter applications.” In Cycle-mode (cycle jack patched to the input), the Smooth side “will oscillate yielding a voltage controlled triangle wave LFO.

The Coupler is an internal comparator which compares the output levels of the Smooth and the Stepped Generators. This output is useful for generating complex control voltages or random voltages.

The Random*Source version of the Smooth & Stepped Generator for Euro is a licensed and authorized adaption of the original Serge design that provides an increased audio range of the Smooth Generator and a bipolar (“hot”) Coupler output in addition to the regular (unipolar) Coupler output.

Now - for the first time ever and licenced by Serge - the SSG is available as DIY (SMT) kit for Euro.

Some details of the Random*Source Serge SSG module:

  • Under licence from Serge Tcherepnin
  • Authentic SERGE design
  • Increased audio range (up to 4kHz)
